Facebook’s Timeline now available to everyone

People around the world began seeing messages from Facebook on Thursday encouraging them to start scrapbooking their life.

The service’s new Timeline profiles, which Facebook introduced nearly three months ago at its annual conference, is now available to any of the site’s 800 million users who decide to activate it. Soon, Facebook will turn it on for everybody with an alert at the top of profiles, the company said in a blog post.

Timeline will arrange a user’s posts, photos and important milestones (weddings, births of children, etc.) chronologically in two columns of information, with a blue line marked by dates running vertically down the middle. On the right, visitors can easily skip to certain months or years to see what was happening at that time in a person’s life, and below that is advertisements.

Steve Jobs’ sister: ‘Death didn’t happen to Steve, he achieved it’

The last minutes in the life of Steve Jobs were still filled by the epiphanies and moments of inspiration that fed his inventor’s mind, according to an intimate portrait provided by Jobs’ sister in a eulogy published Sunday in The New York Times.

Mona Simpson’s eulogy — originally read during Jobs’ memorial service on October 16 — is a sister’s celebration of a brother she knew only later in life, and a lament of losing a best friend. It weaves in words what she believed were the foundations of Jobs’ genius: his humility and hard work, his love of learning and his family.

Google+ gets more sign-language friendly

A video-chat feature called Hangouts is one thing that sets Google+ apart from Facebook and Twitter.
When lots of people are chatting together in a Hangout, only one person “has the floor” at a time — and you can tell who this person is because their video feed is by far the largest on your computer screen. Until recently, Google’s computers used microphone volume to determine who got to be in control of the conversation. So the person yelling the loudest got control of the virtual chat.
