Microsoft proposes to buy Yahoo search

BOSTON (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp has proposed to buy Yahoo Inc’s search business and take a minority stake in the Web pioneer, stopping short of a full-out merger, a person familiar with the discussions said on Monday.

As part of the deal Yahoo would put its Asian assets, including significant minority stakes in Yahoo Japan and China’s Alibaba Group, up for sale, while Microsoft would buy a chunk of what remains of the company, the source said.

Nintendo launches new fitness video game in U.S.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co Ltd launched its “Wii Fit” exercise game in the United States on Monday, hoping to get gamers off the couch and appeal to new audiences such as women and older people.

Nintendo is banking on “Wii Fit” to further broaden the appeal of its Wii gaming console, which has already become a smash hit due to its motion-sensing controller and simple, easy-to-learn games.

IBM to offer business intelligence via BlackBerry

BOSTON (Reuters) - IBM said on Wednesday it has started selling software that lets customers access its Cognos business intelligence software via BlackBerry mobile devices.

The device maker, Research in Motion is encouraging businesses to create software specifically for the BlackBerry so that it can boost usage beyond the e-mail, messaging, calendar and phone services for which it is best known.

Mobile phones more important than wallets

TORONTO (Reuters) - More than one-third of workers would choose their mobile phone over their wallet, keys, laptop or digital music player if they had to leave the house for 24 hours and could take only one item, a new survey has found.

The survey, conducted by market research firm IDC and sponsored by Nortel Networks Corp (NT.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) (NT.N: Quote, Profile, Research), found that while more than 38 percent of the 2,367 people polled chose their mobile phones, less than 30 percent chose their wallets first.

Hackers shut down Zimbabwe state newspaper website

HARARE (Reuters) - Hackers attacked the website of Zimbabwe’s state-owned Herald newspaper and shut it down for three days, the newspaper said on Monday.

The Herald is widely seen as the official mouthpiece of President Robert Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party and has been critical of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) which won the country’s disputed March 29 elections.
